Para-Aramid Sewing Thread Ne 20/3 for Heat-Exposed Seams

A heat-exposed product depends on more than the fabric or outer shell. The thread must also remain suitable for the seam design, sewing process and expected operating conditions.

SureTex supplies a yellow sewing thread spun from 100% para-aramid fiber. The listed construction is Ne 20/3, also written as 20S/3, with a linear density of 88.6 tex. The product brief identifies this specification as in stock.

These figures identify the supplied thread. Final selection should still be based on the complete sewn assembly rather than on count or fiber type alone.

Why the heat requirement needs a broader review

A temperature figure on a technical sheet is useful for material comparison, but it does not automatically define the operating limit of a finished seam.

The supplied data lists a decomposition temperature of at least 400°C. Decomposition temperature describes a material response under a specified test condition. It should not be presented as a guaranteed continuous-use temperature for clothing, equipment or composite products.

In service, the thread may experience a combination of heat, flame, pressure, rubbing, moisture and chemicals. Heat may also reach the seam through the fabric, coating, lining or adjacent components. Those materials can lose strength or change shape before the thread reaches its reported decomposition point.

For procurement decisions, the more useful question is not simply "What temperature can the thread withstand?" It is "How does the complete seam perform during the actual exposure cycle?"

Three-ply construction and sewing compatibility

Ne 20/3 is a three-ply spun construction. The count, ply and twist affect the way the thread passes through the machine and settles into the stitch. They may also influence seam profile, flexibility, visual uniformity and the likelihood of damage during sewing.

Before approving the thread for production, review it together with the following variables:

fabric or composite thickness;

surface structure and coating;

needle type and size;

stitch length and stitch pattern;

sewing speed;

upper-thread and bobbin settings;

required seam strength and appearance.
